Mea culpa. I could have phrased that better. I should have said I only realised the scale of these events thanks to these sites. I'll admit I wasn't aware of the level of organisation. I have been to the MPH show a few times but had no idea there were modified shows on the same scale.

Nobody is judging you Si Smile

People are just putting their opinions across on the show scene and if you apply for a Press Pass and get one fair enough that is up to the show organisers to decide at the end of the day but as Mark said, organisers are cracking down on who they give passes out to so if you don't get a reply or get refused just don't be disheartened.

Ultimately we all go to these shows for our own reasons.

Although the pictures on my site go back as far as 2004 it is only this year that I have started doing them for my website and during this year I have throughly enjoyed myself which is the main reason I do it. As a bonus I have meat some great friendly people both photographers and models.

So, please don't think people are judging you, it is up to you what you want to do.

So just enjoy yourself at the shows.

Also when you see Mark or somebody else from Pimpster at Modded UK get them to point me out and come and say hello.

If you are there for the weekend, it is my birthday on the Monday so I will be celebrating it a day or two early so I will even let you buy me a drink.

You too Mark, Colin, Darren and CK! Wink

Don't worry Skids, I'll have fun whatever. I never said getting a pass was the be all and end all for me. It'd just be nice Smile

I'll try and track you down and buy you that birthday beer... might even buy Mark one too Wink

Cracking debate, keep it coming, thats what forums are for i think.

I've being reading the thread with interest and must admit I'm tending to lean towards mark's point of view.
I do think the shows are becoming more focused on girls and not what the show titles say(car show!!),and hands up I tend to take more images of girls than cars but I attend the modded shows because I enjoy them and I have met some really top people since I have been going to them.I could name them on here but I would suggest we would all pretty much come up with a long list of the same names, models, exibitors and fellow togs.
On the point of media/press passes I do think we get away with murder
most of the pictures go on various websites, galleries and never see a magazine or newspaper which is where the event organizers would like them to go,I always feel more then grateful when I recieve a pass because I realize a lot of people pay a lot of money to attend these shows and I'm getting in for free and getting the best vantage point for photographs.I always send a disc of images to the organizer for their use to promote the event, may take a while but it will get there.
Maybe the time has come to limit the number of passes dished out to 'press/media' and only allow free entrance into the shows to people who are working for legitimate publications(car magazines, newspapers,t.v,recognized websites and I will say Pimpster as a good example) or does someone come up with a compromise for example, reduced entrance fees and good access for photographers in return for images.just an idea,it would be interesting to hear more peoples thourghts on the subject, maybe any of the girls got a view or maybe an event organizer?

I like the idea of reduced entrance fees in exchange for pictures.
The only thing is people will promise pictures to get a cheap pass and then not deliver.

Mind you they will only do it the once Very Happy

Maybe for example, I go to a show this year and pay the full amount to get in and then when I send them pictures they give me a reduced rate for the next years event, or at a place like Santa Pod that does a lot of shows, for the next event.

I went to the Modball Party in London and only took my little point and shoot camera because it was a nightclub and they limit the amount of people with 'proper' cameras

But one of the organisers of the event saw my pictures and asked for copies and in return offered me a pass for the next event and said I could take my better camera.

I think that is a fair trade because he knows I will get better pictures next time and I will happily let him have copies again.

Interesting debate.I side with mark I think some shows are way too easy to get passes for,i also think some are way too strict (santa pod shows as already mentioned by Andy).
Some shows which I will not mention also give out free passes if you promise a cd of pics.Again as Skids (least I think it was skids Smile )said this can be easily abused.
I attend Modified car shows for the cars, the girls and the general vibe you get at these shows.I only started attending these shows about 3 years ago and would say its a rough 50/50 split of if I paid entry or not.If I have ever gained free entry it's never been because of UK Show Models.
Though UK Show Models has been of assistance at shows Smile

Just to add I also attend lots of other shows, events, motorsport meetings etc for both free and paid entry to photograph

Where are you Alias?

I hope we haven't scared you off.

I didn't see you at Modded UK and thought you were going to be there.

If you didn't go you missed a cracking show!

Long story short - I couldn't make it. Sounds like I missed a good un Sad

Back to the debate, I'd go the opposite way to AndyW. I don't think any of us 'togs are after media passes to get in free. In fact I'd go so far as to suggested we'd pay a premium to get an Access Some Areas ticket.

After all you pay more to get a good seat at the theatre don't you? Smile

Hello there ,
An interesting thread . I admit up front that I only have a passing interest in cars or motorbikes! . As an enthusiastic amateur I am happy to photograph from whatever vantage point I can find . I have taken photo's over the shoulder of most of the regulars on this forum!! Out of interest , at USC did the guys at the front photographing the pole dancers have press passes ? , being stuck at the back of the crowd I did envy them somewhat!Although I found at Trax that being next to the stage for BofB was somewhat hazardous. Having to duck on several ocassions to avoid flying legs .. and also being watered by a Fuel girl at Donny South was rather bizarre. I think for the modified shows that the balance is fine . If I was attending just for the cars as the bulk of visitors do I would not have been disapointed at any show I have been to this year .
Mark

I was in the front at USC as NikkiLee said it would be OK and I have managed to get a front seat at quite a few but I always check that it is OK and if I were ever told no I would not have a problem with that (well not openly anyway Wink)

I think they are glad to have people at the front if there are not many true press people and I think people know me now and know that my pictures will be guaranteed to appear on the Internet so it is good advertising even if it is only a humble site such as mine.

I think I mentioned it before but if ever I see the people such as the 'togs on this site taking pictures I will stay out of their way as they have a more genuine reason than me (OK I take pictures over their shoulders but I would never walk in front of them or block their view in any way).

Its a shame the same can't be said for some of the people with their mobile phones!, I have had people walk right in front of me as if I weren't there, an 'accidental' trigger of my flash sometime makes them realise I am there though Wink
